An Overview of Home Automation

A Smart Home is a digitally networked household where devices and functions operate automatically, are controlled centrally, and work intelligently with each other.

A simple practical example: When someone enters the hallway, the light should turn on automatically and, of course, turn off again after the hallway has been cleared. The brightness and color temperature should be bright and energetic during the day, but dimmed at night so you aren't blinded on your midnight trips to the fridge.

Well-Known Smart Home Systems & Standards

Manufacturer Ecosystems: Apple HomeKit / Apple Home, Google Home / Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa / Echo, Samsung SmartThings, Bosch Smart Home, Philips Hue, etc.
Modern Wireless Standards:
- Zigbee: Energy-efficient standard in the 2.4 GHz range. Uses a self-organizing mesh network where devices forward signals to increase range and stability. Optimal for sensors, bulbs, and smart plugs.
- Z-Wave: Wireless standard in the sub-GHz frequency range (868 MHz in the EU). Extremely low interference since it doesn't run on the crowded 2.4 GHz band, secured by AES-128 encryption.
- Thread: Modern, low-power, IPv6-based mesh networking protocol designed for smart home devices, forming the foundation of Matter.
- Matter: A new, royalty-free connectivity standard that unifies proprietary ecosystems. Allows local, fast, and secure communication among devices from different brands.
Central Hubs & Control Software: openHAB, Loxone, FHEM, Hubitat Elevation, and especially Home Assistant.

Central Control with Home Assistant

Home Assistant is a free and open-source smart home platform designed to act as a central controller. It prioritizes local control and privacy, running on a Raspberry Pi or local mini PC without requiring cloud connectivity.

Combining Home Assistant and Zigbee on a Raspberry Pi makes for a stable, low-power, and affordable solution. With a dedicated Zigbee USB coordinator, you can easily control more than 100 sensors, lights, and thermostats from various brands.
